Hail, Ceasar! An Honest Review

The Coen brothers have been one of my favorite set of directors ever since the great great film “Raising Arizona” it was by far the second greatest Nicolas Cage film I’ve seen in my entire life,(the first of course being Con-Air) but not their best film to date. No that would be “The Big Lebowski” which I had to watch 2 or 3 times to actually grasp the whole plot of,because it’s actually a lot more than just “Porn Stars pee on a Man’s rug”. Now you’re probably wondering what all of this has to do with “Hail, Ceasar!” well as I’ve stated before Joel and Ethan Coen are known for making movies where the plots kind of get all over the place but usually resolve nicely towards the end. With “Hail, Ceasar!” I was a little bit confused as to what had just happened.

The movie takes place in a Hollywood lot in the 1950’s,World War II is over and everyone is afraid of Communists. The story centers around the Eddie Mannix (played by Josh Brolin) a Hollywood Fixer for Capitol Pictures. Things go horribly awry when the big shot Hollywood Star Baird Whitlock (played by George Clooney) goes missing, it’s up to Eddie to find out where he’s gone while keeping the Press at bay and keeping the Studio’s other stars from collapsing in on themselves. Had the movie just stayed with this simple plotline switching between Baird and Eddie’s perspectives it would have been phenomenal, but instead 3 different stories featuring other Hollywood Stars are thrown into the mix. Which Ultimately ends up very disappointing when the only resolution at the end of the movie is for Baird and Eddie.

That’s not to say that the other character’s stories are uninteresting it just means that there’s a lot more to be answered and there’s no way I would pay to see “Hail, Ceasar! 2: That’s a Wrap”. But in terms of a Coen Brothers film it seems like another one for the Books. I’ll probably pick it up again and re-watch it like I did with every other on of their films because I’m sure there’s something I missed.

“Hail, Ceasar!” is out now on DvD and Blu-Ray and you can pick up a copy at Amazon.
